Programme Overview

The Women Empowerment Program in Arusha focuses on supporting local women through skills training, education, and community initiatives that promote independence and self-confidence. Volunteers work alongside women’s groups to provide mentorship, assist in workshops such as English, entrepreneurship, and vocational skills, and help create opportunities for economic growth. The program aims to break barriers, encourage equal participation, and empower women to improve their livelihoods while contributing positively to their families and communities.

Programme Requirements

To participate in the teaching program in Tanzania with Rafiki Interns & Volunteers Africa, applicants are expected to meet a few key requirements. These include:

  • Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the time of joining the project.
  • Good communication skills in English (knowledge of Swahili is an advantage).
  • Passion for gender equality and women’s rights.
  • Respect for cultural values and sensitivity when working with diverse groups.

Duration and Location

The program is based in Arusha, Tanzania, where volunteers work closely with women’s groups in both urban and rural areas. Placements are flexible, lasting from a few weeks to several months, giving volunteers the chance to contribute meaningfully while experiencing the cultural richness of Tanzania.

Living Arrangements and Accommodation

Volunteers are hosted at the Rafiki Houses in Arusha, offering a safe, welcoming, and communal environment. Rooms are typically shared, with access to common spaces, meals, and supportive staff who ensure a family-like atmosphere. The houses are conveniently located near project sites, making it easy to balance volunteering with cultural immersion.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  1. Assist in conducting workshops on literacy, entrepreneurship, and vocational training.
  2. Provide mentorship and guidance to women aiming to build confidence and leadership skills.
  3. Support initiatives that promote financial independence, such as small business projects.
  4. Organize group discussions on health, hygiene, and social issues affecting women.
  5. Collaborate with local organizations to strengthen women-focused community programs.
